Proud of her Gifts ~37~

This post is based on an article from the February 1998 issue of Australian Golf Digest.

I thought it was an interesting article in relation to female golfers and the perspective of being restricted by their ‘boobs’. Jane Crafter, who was a prominent golfer from Australia (now retired) won the Australian Women’s Open at Yarra Yarra Golf Club.

Television commentator at the time Ben Wright created a furore when he suggested women were disadvantaged on the golf course because of their breasts. “Women are handicapped by having boobs. It’s not easy for them to keep their left arm straight, and that’s one of the tenets of the game. Their boobs get in the way,” said Wright. His statement – together with comments about lesbian golfers affecting sponsorship on the US LPGA Tour – was so offensive that he was later axed by his employer, the American CBS network.

Jane in response stated “That’s rubbish. My boobs certainly do not get in the way. In any case, if you try to keep the left arm straight you only create tension. It’s not embarrassing for me at all to talk about boobs. I grew up with them. It’s not as though, at 40, I’ve suddenly acquired them. I did not have a choice. I have to make sure  I work on my posture over the ball. I have to make sure I give my arms room to work. In fact, my boobs help me turn. I turn everything together.” When asked whether she swung the golf club under or over her boobs, Jane replied, “Oh, over. And the swing works pretty well, doesn’t it?”

An interesting article I thought 🙂

Happy golfing folks!
