Don’t lose your grip ~25~

This article is taken from the February 1998 issue of Australian Golf Digest.

Grips of golf clubs are important to look after and maintain. However, the article states that they are like the windshield wipers of equipment – the thought if replacing them only occurs when it rains. By that time, it is usually too late.

A grip’s life span usually depends on the specific golfer that uses it. It is a combination of body chemistry, how the grip is cared for, how often is the club used and how the club is gripped. The picture attached in the article below shows examples of grips suffering from old age and poor maintenance.

The article mentions Fred Couples as a good role model for grip maintenance who often wipes down his grip before each shot to get rid of body oils and dirt. This way, he extends the life of the grip and also never needs to worry about losing control of his club.

The article concludes by saying that there is nothing more dangerous than a 10 handicapper with a 1-iron in the bag, but perhaps equally dangerous is a club with a slippery grip. Any form of moisture between the golfer’s hands and the grip can make the club a lethal weapon!

Happy golfing 🙂
