Cushion shots from greenside rough ~22~

David Leadbetter writes that many players have trouble hitting short shots from thick grass just off the green. They either chunk it and hit it fat or blade it and hit it thin.

For better control, visualise the grass behind and under the ball as a cushion. You are not trying to hit the ball, but instead to sweep the cushion onto the green. Open your stance and clubface, and then with a smooth swing, contact the grass first to lift the ball up and out of the rough on a cushion of grass.
