3 Keys to more Power in your Drive ~15~

This post is 1 of 3 posts that will refer to an article in the February 1998 Australian Golf Digest in relation to swing technique by 3 LPGA players.

The topic of this post is on how to gain more power for your drives.

Some statistics: Most players would use the driver 14 times in a typical round, off the tee on the par 4s and par 5s. This is more than any other club in the bag apart from the putter. Therefore, even if one can’t hit the driver perfectly each time, improving one’s driving ability will instantly improve one’s game.

The 3 keys for more power are as follows:

  1. Low and wide – Establish a wide arc early in the takeaway by moving the clubhead away from the ball low and straight. Maintain that arc throughout the swing to allow the clubhead to travel a further distance and to accumulate more speed. Also keep your hands and arms quiet for as along as you can.
  2. Turn behind the ball – The more turn and resistance you can produce, by anchoring your right leg and providing resistance for your upper body which rotates away from the ball, the more clubhead speed you will get when you uncoil on the downswing.
  3. Accelerate to a full finish – You must continue to accumulate speed beyond impact. A full finish, with your body facing the target and your hands over your left shoulder, is an indicator that you have gotten the most out of your swing.

Happy golfing!
