Pitching from a tight fairway ~11~

Today’s article is taken from April 2001 issue of Golf Magazine Australian Edition.

“Hitting a high lofted wedge from a tight fairway is like playing a bunker shot: If you don’t let the club work the way it was designed, you’re sure to struggle. But if you correctly utilise the club’s “bounce” (the trailing edge of the sole shown in red in the article attached), you could hit a ball off a brick if you had to.”

I definitely agree with the above. Especially in the situation where the fairway grass has been cut to as short as possible and it feels like you are walking almost on green cement which is what a ‘tight fairway’ means.

The lesson of this article is to allow the club to do its work according to the way it has been designed – especially the more lofted sand and lob wedges.

To hit the shot correctly:

  1. Play the ball in the centre of your stance
  2. Lay the clubface back to expose the club’s bounce
  3. Keeping your wrists very firm in the backswing
  4. At impact, try to make a divot with the bounce (which you will not be able to) sliding the back of the club under the ball
  5. And swing the club down on a shallow path (from the inside) allowing the clubhead to pass your hands through impact

Hope it makes sense!
