Bunker Play ~10~

Today’s article is taken from the February 1998 issue of Golf Australia.

It is about bunker play. Many beginning golfers tend to be reluctant to play bunker shots as it is very different to hitting from the fairway or rough. However, if the right technique is learnt right from the start, then there is no need for the reluctance or fear. It can actually start becoming a fun and enjoyable exercise.

In image 1 of the article attached, the correct position of the sand iron is shown – the leading edge of the club does not slice through the sand, but instead bounces through it.

The article recommends practicing bunker shots off a board in the sand. While practising, focus on digging your toes into the sand so that you are leaning slightly forward, and your weight and head should be centred, not behind or in front of the ball.

The standard sound made from a normal lie in the bunker should be a ‘thud’ and not a ‘smack’ …

Happy golfing!
