Pre-game Practice Routine ~8~

A second post for today as I was unable to do one yesterday …

This article was taken from the October 2003 Issue (#176) of Golf Australia and it was written by Adam Scott who was at that time an upcoming golfing professional making a mark on a global scale.

The concept of the pre-game practice routine is applicable to golfers of all shapes, sizes and gender. I fully agree with this and I would find that the days I go through the pre-game routine – mainly involving stretching, I would be more flexible and ready for a good game.

The pre-game preparation is one of the major differences between amateurs and pros. Most club golfers probably don’t have as much time available to prepare, however even a scaled down version of the pre-game practice will be beneficial.

The routine is as follows:

  1. [STRETCHING] Stretch your quadriceps – each leg a few times, and for about 15 to 20 seconds each
  2. Stretch your hamstrings – each leg a few times, and for about 15 to 20 seconds each
  3. Stretch your shoulder and upper body muscles by lifting your arms behing your head, cross them over and reach down your back with one arm. With your other hand, apply some downward pressure just above the elbow of your reaching arm. Repeat a few times for each arm.
  4. [DRIVING RANGE] Start hitting some balls beginning with short pitch shots – 40 or 50 metre shots with your sand iron / wedge
  5. Then work your way through the bag – a few shots with wedge, 8-iron, 6-iron until you get to your woods.
  6. Hit a few shots with your 5-wood and 3-wood
  7. Ultimately hit some driver shots – about 10 to 15 times
  8. Then ‘warm down’ by hitting a few soft pitch shots, then move to the short game area
  9. [SHORT GAME]Β Practice some bunker shots and get a feel in the sand
  10. Chip some balls onto the green varying the shots – some high lobs, some low runs
  11. [PUTTING] Finally move on to the green and hit some putts starting from very long one and gradually moving to the shorter putts. Try and finish with holing a couple of putts

And then go out onto the course and have an enjoyable and fun experience!

Happy golfing everyone πŸ™‚
